Every few months, we will be introducing intensive workshop series on different beats and topics in literature, with the first one being on writing poetry . Workshop 3: Free Verse Poetry by Rochelle Potkar
About the Workshop: Welcome to our third workshop for the first series of our project, The Workshop Series. This time, we have poet and writer Rochelle Potkar conducting a comprehensive workshop on writing and learning free verse poetry.
Free Verse Poetry is composed with non-metrical, non-rhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythms of speech. While it is one of the most simplest form of poetry, it is yet most difficult to write. Because while it doesn’t constrict the poet with rules about form, it requires him or her to work hard at creating a piece that is beautiful and meaningful without any specific guidelines about rhyme and meter.
About the Instructor: Rochelle Potkar’s book, ‘The Arithmetic of Breasts and other stories’ was shortlisted for The Digital Book of the Year Award 2014, by Publishing Next. She was a writer-in-residence at the UNESCO city of literature – Iowa’s International Writing Program (IWP), Fall 2015. ‘Four Degrees of Separation’ (Paperwall, 2016) is her first book of poetry.

Workshop 2: The Politics of Poetry by Harnidh Kaur
About the Workshop: This workshop will be based on political poetry in the subcontinent, the importance of political poetry, how to trace socioeconomic conditions and examine privilege, the idea of ‘home’, and how poetry can be harnessed to give back to a community and representation.
About the Instructor: Harnidh is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Policy. Her first collection, The Inability of Words (Writer’s Workshop 2016), is now available. Her work is published in journals like EPW, Brown Girl Magazine, The Bombay Review, Cafe Dissensus Daily, The Sunflower Collective, amongst others. She was chosen as a winner of 25 Under 25 by Campus Diaries under the ‘writing’ category. She’s currently working on her second book under Thought Catalog Press, New York. She regularly writes poetry on public policy and contemporary issues.

Workshop 1: Introducing Haiku & Haibun Poetry by Rochelle Potkar
About the Workshop: We have all heard of the haiku. The Japanese short poetry forms also bring to us the haibun. Many-a-times, one feels one can write a bit of story and poetry, but not enough of both. This, then is the perfect frame and form that allows you to play with words, forming prose and poetry, and balancing the tale with the verse, the verse with the tale.
1. To learn to construct haiku
2. To learn the fine balance of story and poetry in writing a haibun.
3. To write two haibun.
